I Am the Bread of Life

Brenda Myree • Jesus Christ
I remember, when I was young, the smell of bread cooking in my grandmother's kitchen. The aroma was awesome. I couldn't wait for the bread to come out of the oven so I could have a piece. Unlike the bread of today, bread during Biblical times was more hearty. It was made of different whole grains, nuts, fruits. It was a meal in itself. So what did Jesus mean when He said, "I Am the Bread of Life"?
John 6:32-35:

Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

And Jesus sid unto them, I am the bread of life; he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

So, what did Jesus mean when He said, "I am the bread of life"?  First, what was bread but a source of life for the natural man.  It was something which sustained them.  It was packed with all the nutrients, vitamins, grain, fruit, etc. that people needed during that day.  It was a meal all by itself.

In John 1:1 -4 the Word says that,

"In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  The same was in the beginning with God.  All things that were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made.  In Him was life; and the life was the light of men.

It continues in John 1: 14 by saying, "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us."  Jesus was saying that He, the Word, is all we need to sustain us - our spiritual man.  The Word is full of everything we need for life & godliness!  God provided mana from heaven for the children of Israel but now God has sent to you the true bread from heaven... the One who sustains, the One who nourishes, the One that fills and fulfills!  He, the Word, is the Bread of Life.  If you believe on Him would never hunger or thirst again!  The Word continually satisfies your spiritual thirst and hunger.  The more you eat and drink of the Word, the more you hunger and thirst after the things of God rather than the things of the world.  He continually satisfies.  See Matthew 5:6:

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled."

In Revelation 10:9 the Word says:

"So I went to the angel and said to him, "Give me the little book."   And he said to me, "Take and eat it; and it will make your stomach bitter, but it will be as sweet as honey in your mouth."

So how can the Book (the Word) be sweet as honey in your mouth but bitter to your stomach?  The words that the Lord speaks to us through His Word taste sweet because they are what we need to nourish us, to help in our spiritual growth.  The bitter part is when the Word helps us to recognize areas in our lives that need to change and, if you are anything like me, sometimes it's a little hard to see imperfections in our own lives.  But, as it states in Romans 12:2;

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

The more we partake of the Word, the more transformed we become because our minds will be continually renewed by the Word.  Our lives will begin to change.  From faith to faith and from glory to glory.  We will be conformed into the image of His Son.  (Romans 8:29).  And, in all reality, that is our ultimate goal.  To be conformed into the image of Jesus.  He will be coming back for a Bride worthy of Himself, without spot or wrinkle.  He is looking for Himself in His Bride.  We are to look like Him, act like Him, speak like Him.  So much so that when people see us, they see only Jesus.  We are to exhibit His character in love, compassion, speech, action, power and demonstration.  Eating the Bread of Life will bring us to this point in our spiritual walk.  Taste and see that the Lord is good!  (Psalm 34:8).

Jesus, the Word, is Life.  John 6:63 states that ... the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.  The words that Jesus speaks as The Word, are spirit and they are life!  John 21:17 says that the ". . . Word is truth".  Notice, it does not say that the Word is a truth or contains truth but it is truth!  Jesus, the Word, is Truth!  If you feed on the Word, this Bread of Life, you will be feeding on Truth.  Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life".  (John 14:6).  We will be doing a separate study on this scripture but I just wanted to use this to show that Jesus describes Himself as the life as well as the truth in more than one instance.

So, let's break this down.  Jesus, the Word, the Bread of Life, His Word or He Himself, is what gives you life.  He is truth.  You can take Him at His Word for His Word is Truth.  He is Truth.  He only spoke what He heard the Father speak.  (John 12:49) You are either going to take Him at His Word or not!  You cannot be on both sides of the fence.  Either you believe on Him or you don't.  You must be fully persuaded that His Word is Truth.  That He is Life.

If you are looking to increase your spiritual walk and intimacy with Jesus, then go to the Word, the Bread of Life.  The more you eat, the more you will be satisfied but, at the same time, the more you are satisfied, the more you will hunger and thirst after the things of God.

Choose you this day who you will serve.  Choose the Bread of Life, choose Jesus, the Word, the Truth, the Life!
